5 Tips to Boost Your Computer’s Lifespan

b2ap3_thumbnail_cpulife400.jpgWe all dread that moment. Whether it was a power surge, an accidental water spill, or a swift roundhouse kick out of frustration, your business computer is dead and needs to be replaced. While no computer will last forever, you can extend your PC's life with proper care. Here are tips that will boost your computer's lifespan.

System Updates
It seems like every time you turn around it's time to update your system again. Operating system manufacturers are always pushing out newer versions of their products, but it's almost become annoying to see that little window pop up on your screen to offer another update. By updating your OS, you will help keep your software properly maintained and protected. If you have a Mac, a system update will also defrag your system, a task that needs to be done manually by PC users. You'll also want to make sure that your anti-virus system is up to date. We recommend performing system updates overnight, so as not to cut into your workday productivity. At XFER, this is one of the core services we offer with our flat-rate IT services.

Surge Protectors
This is a super easy, cheap, and practical solution to many CPU headaches. By plugging your computer into a surge protector, you can almost guarantee that your machine will be safe when the power goes out, and if it surges back on. We also recommend unplugging your computer in the event of a storm as a precaution. But, if you can't make it to the office in time, a quality surge protector will have your back.

Infrequent Power Downs
It's practical to think that you should turn your computer on and off every time that you use it, but playing with the power switch too frequently can actually contribute to your machine's performance decline. We recommend powering your workstation down about once a day, but doing so too frequently can stress its hardware out, and aid its demise. When we manage and maintain our client's networks our best practice is to schedule the backups for your off-peak hours to ensure your staff isn't interrupted.

Clean it Up
Believe it or not, keeping your computer clean does more good than providing mere aesthetic benefits. Cleaning your system cuts down the threat of dust getting inside of your CPU and stick to its gears. You'll also want to use canned air to clean your fan, which can slow down and be ineffective if it collects too much dust and dirt. You may even want to keep your workstation covered up while it's not in use.

Don't Move It
Even if you use a laptop computer, it's best not to move a system while it's on. Too much external movement can actually throw off the moving pieces inside of your machine and cause them to malfunction. If you operate a laptop and need to move it while you're using it, be sure to use two hands and carry it from the base, not the screen. Also, invest in a protective case for when you travel.

As a business operator, it's your responsibility to cut costs and increase efficiency. Following these five tips will help you keep your machines around the office longer so that you don't have to spend more time and money shopping for new ones. There are many more ways than five to keep your machines running clean and last longer. XFER can help you properly maintain your hardware and software to help your business run as efficiently as possible.
